Cancellation of the Burrum Heads Easter Fishing Classic in 2020
On Tuesday 17th March 2020 7pm, the Burrum Heads Amateur Fishing Club held an emergency ‘special general meeting’ to discuss the immediate future of the Burrum Heads Easter Fishing Classic in context of the COVID19 Virus and the directives/requirements of the Federal and State for social distancing and group/mass gatherings.
As a result of the current circumstances we as a nation and people are in; we based our decision on the following:
Health implications of the COVID19 virus and the impacts it could have on our community
Our social responsibility
The legal ramifications to the club, its members and anyone who is found to participate in a group gathering of 500+
The decision has not been made lightly as we are acutely aware of the implications our event has in our community and region:
The economic loss will be significant for our local business
The economic impact on vendors attending the event will be significant
The economic impact on holiday homes, resorts, and our 2 caravan parks
The lack of promotion and awareness of our 122 sponsors will have an impact
The social disconnection and disappointment of visitors and attendees to the event as many have been attending for more than 10 years
Costs incurred by the Burrum Heads Amateur Fishing Club to stage the event cannot be claimed through insurance. The club has taken a loss
We have initiated a process of refunding registrations, purchases of merchandise, and sponsor donations. This will take some time but we are hopeful this will be completed in the next week.
It with deep sadness that we officially announce the Burrum Heads Easter Fishing Classic is CANCELLED for 2020. With improved circumstances relating to COVID19 we WILL be back in 2021 bigger, better, and really keen to put on a great Fishing Classic for our return.
